How do I use a database?

Answer

First, make sure you are using the database links provided on the library website, on the page Database A-Z List.

These links will take you to the database’s search page. Databases work by entering keywords (one to two word phrases) related to your research question into the search bar. Enter one keyword per search bar. Click on “Advanced Search” for multiple search bars.

Do not enter your entire research question into the search bar. Instead choose keywords related to your topic.

For example:

DO NOT ENTER: How does social media impact teenagers’ mental health?

ENTER: social media, teenagers, mental health

Once you enter your keywords, click “Search” to view the results. From there, look to the left or right column to filter results by type of source, publication date, etc.

Databases can be complex, so please do not hesitate to schedule a Book a Librarian appointment or visit the library to have a staff member sit down with you and walk you through the process of using databases. Additionally, we have basic video tutorials for many popular databases available.
